The story of Dr. Selma Wehl, heroine of medical practice and Torah living.
For three generations, the name Selma Wehl was synonymous with the highest standards of medicine, integrity, compassion, courage, dedication to patients and devotion to the Torah. Dr. Wehl was a brilliant student and proud daughter of a rabbinical family in Hamburg. She became the quintessential Orthodox Jewish doctor in Germany, at a time when women hardly ever made it into, much less out of, medical school. She and her husband, Reb Aaron, forged a life based on total adherence to every iota of the Torah and incredible loyalty to patients. Then came Hitler, and the Jewish world came crashing down. The Wehls made it to America and, in middle-age, began life again. "Dr." Wehl was not a doctor anymore. She had to learn a language, take courses, pass tests, become accredited, and in the process scrub floors and wash linens to keep body and soul together. But she and her husband succeeded. They prospered mightily in the only way that mattered to them: maintaining their loyalty to Maker and man, without compromise or the barest breath of deception. Anyone who ever saw Dr. Selma Wehl in her eighties walking miles on the Sabbath to visit a patient, who saw famed specialists stand in awe of her diagnostic skills, who saw her berate young parents for "daring" to not call her in the middle of the night, who saw her pride at the Torah accomplishments of her offspring, knew that he was in the presence of greatness. And so did anyone who ever watched Reb Aaron at his learning, walking to shul when the pre-dawn streets were still cold and empty, or accompanying his beloved wife on post-midnight calls. No wonder so many of the greatest rabbis of our time had such respect and admiration for her. This is a warm, intimate, and inspiring book about two great lives. No one who reads it will fail to be elevated and strive for new heights, to follow the footsteps of an indomitable lady whose skills were legendary and whose memory is eternal.
