Down through the ages, the Jewish people has faced two kind of threats: one, to its spiritual survival; the other, to its physical existence. When the ancient Greeks tried to assimilate us, we put our lives on the line to resist them. Hashem responded with open miracles, for which we give thanks on Chanukah. When the ancient Persians decreed our total annihilation, we repented, prayed, and recommitted to Torah. Hashem saved us with hidden miracles, for which we give thanks on Purim.
